Does child health consultation treat croup?

Croup commonly causes a barking cough, a hoarse voice and noisy breathing after a viral illness. A clinician listens to the child at rest and when upset, checks oxygenation and observes how hard the child is working to breathe. The assessment helps distinguish mild croup from airway narrowing that may need medicine or monitoring.

Keep your child calm and upright, because crying can make noisy breathing worse. Offer frequent fluids and allow rest. Follow the clinician’s instructions for any prescribed medicine; do not use leftover antibiotics or cough remedies unless advised. A cool, comfortable room may help, but steam can burn and is not a substitute for assessment.

Seek urgent help if breathing is laboured, the skin pulls in between the ribs, noisy breathing continues while your child is calm, or the child cannot drink. Emergency care is needed for blue or grey lips, unusual sleepiness, drooling with difficulty swallowing, pauses in breathing or worsening symptoms.
