Does child health consultation treat bronchiolitis?

Bronchiolitis is a viral infection affecting the small airways, most often in babies and young children. A clinician may ask when the cough, noisy breathing, blocked nose or fever began, then observe the child’s breathing, colour, alertness and ability to feed. The consultation helps distinguish mild illness from breathing difficulty or dehydration. Treatment is commonly supportive; antibiotics do not treat viral bronchiolitis unless another bacterial problem is suspected.

Offer smaller, more frequent feeds if congestion makes feeding tiring, and keep the child upright while awake and supervised. Clear nasal mucus gently if advised. Keep the air smoke-free and follow the clinician’s instructions about monitoring. Do not give cough medicines or other remedies to a young child unless a healthcare professional recommends them. Check the child regularly, including during sleep, for changes in breathing, feeding and responsiveness.

Get urgent medical help if the child is struggling to breathe, has pauses in breathing, turns blue or grey, becomes unusually floppy or difficult to wake, or cannot take enough feeds. Fewer wet nappies, a dry mouth or repeated vomiting can signal dehydration. Babies who were born prematurely or have heart, lung or immune problems may need prompt review if symptoms change.
