Does chemotherapy treat small bowel cancer?

Small bowel cancer can include different tumour types, and each may respond differently to medicines. Surgery may be used when the tumour can be removed. Chemotherapy can be given before an operation to shrink disease, after surgery to treat remaining microscopic cells, or when cancer has spread and needs whole-body treatment.

Your team may review biopsy findings, scans, bowel symptoms, nutrition, kidney and liver function, and previous treatment before recommending a regimen. Medicines are often given in cycles, with checks between cycles for blood counts, hydration, appetite, bowel function, and side effects.

Ask which tumour type was found and what chemotherapy is intended to achieve. Tell the team about diarrhoea, vomiting, weight change, bowel operations, allergies, and every medicine or supplement. Make a plan for fluids, meals, transport, and help at home. Ask when to call about abdominal symptoms or changes in bowel movements.

Contact the treatment team promptly for fever, chills, repeated vomiting, severe diarrhoea, inability to drink, worsening abdominal pain, a swollen abdomen, or inability to pass stool or gas. Seek emergency help for collapse, severe weakness, confusion, severe breathing difficulty, or uncontrolled bleeding.
