Does chemotherapy treat small cell lung cancer?

Small cell lung cancer can grow and spread quickly, so treatment often needs to act throughout the body. Chemotherapy may be combined with radiation to the chest, immunotherapy, or treatment aimed at a particular area. The plan depends on whether disease is limited to the chest or has spread, your breathing, and your general health.

Treatment is usually given in cycles with recovery time between them. The team may use scans, symptoms, examination, and blood tests to assess response. Even when cancer cannot be removed with surgery, chemotherapy may reduce the amount of disease and improve symptoms such as cough or breathlessness.

Tell the oncology team about lung disease, heart problems, hearing changes, nerve symptoms, medicines, and supplements. Ask about anti-sickness treatment, smoking support, nutrition, activity, and whether radiation or immunotherapy will be added. Keep a record of temperature and new symptoms if the team recommends it.

Report fever or chills, worsening cough, new chest pain, confusion, persistent vomiting, or inability to drink without delay. Seek emergency help for severe breathlessness, blue lips, fainting, sudden weakness, or coughing up a large amount of blood. Do not wait for the next appointment when breathing changes rapidly.
