Does chemotherapy treat pancreatic cancer?

Because the medicines circulate through the body, they can act beyond the main pancreatic tumour. Treatment may aim to reduce the chance of cancer returning after an operation, shrink or control disease, ease cancer-related symptoms, or prepare selected patients for local treatment.

Scans help a specialist team assess the tumour’s relationship to nearby blood vessels and whether cancer is present elsewhere. When the tumour can be removed, chemotherapy may form part of care before or after the operation. When removal is not currently feasible, systemic treatment can be the main approach.

The choice of medicine also reflects general fitness, liver function, symptoms and previous treatment. Chemotherapy cannot relieve every problem immediately, so pain relief, pancreatic enzyme capsules, nutrition support and treatment for a blocked bile duct may be needed alongside cancer treatment.

Tell the team about pale or oily stools, diarrhoea, weight loss, bloating after meals or difficulty eating. These changes can occur when the pancreas does not release enough digestive enzymes. A clinician or dietitian can advise on enzyme capsules, how to take them with food, and ways to maintain intake.

Before each chemotherapy visit, report fever, vomiting, reduced fluid intake, worsening pain, yellowing of the skin, dark urine or increasing sleepiness. Bring a current medicines list and check before taking supplements. Blood tests allow the team to review blood-cell counts and liver and kidney function.

Fever or chills during chemotherapy require an immediate call to the cancer unit. Seek prompt assessment for rapidly deepening jaundice, repeated vomiting, inability to drink, new confusion, uncontrolled pain, black stools or vomiting blood.

Call emergency services for collapse, severe breathlessness, sudden chest pain, or facial and throat swelling. If the oncology team has supplied a treatment alert card or emergency number, keep it with you and show it to clinicians who assess you.

Ask whether the cancer is considered removable, what chemotherapy is expected to achieve, and how scans will be used to review it. Also discuss pain control, enzyme capsules, dietitian support, management of jaundice, expected side effects and the number to call for urgent concerns.
