Does chemotherapy treat multiple myeloma?

The medicines aim to reduce abnormal plasma cells in the bone marrow. A regimen may pair chemotherapy with steroids, targeted medicines, immunomodulatory medicines or antibody treatments, depending on the situation.

Myeloma treatment is tailored to symptoms, kidney function, blood counts, bone health, test findings, previous therapy and whether a stem cell transplant is being considered. Chemotherapy may be used during initial treatment, around a transplant or after myeloma returns.

Not every drug in a myeloma regimen is chemotherapy. The distinction matters because each medicine has its own purpose, precautions and side effects. The haematology team can identify each drug and explain how the combination is expected to work.

Share your full medicines list and report numbness, tingling, constipation, infection symptoms, unusual bruising or worsening fatigue. Blood tests may be used to check blood-cell levels and kidney function, while other tests can track the abnormal protein made by myeloma cells.

Drink fluids as advised for your kidney and heart health, follow infection precautions from the treatment unit, and check before using pain relievers or supplements. Tell the team about new dental problems or planned dental work because bone-protecting medicines may require specific coordination.

Use the haematology unit's urgent contact instructions for fever or signs of infection during treatment. Seek emergency care for breathing difficulty, chest pain, severe weakness, new confusion, fainting, uncontrolled bleeding or a serious allergic reaction.

Sudden leg weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, or severe new back pain needs immediate assessment for possible pressure on nerves or the spinal cord. Markedly reduced urine, inability to keep fluids down or rapidly increasing drowsiness also warrants prompt medical advice.

Ask which medicines are chemotherapy, what each part of the regimen contributes, whether transplant planning affects the choice, and how response will be measured. Clarify which side effects require an urgent call and what support is available for infections, bone health, nerve symptoms and nausea.
