Does chemotherapy treat mesothelioma?

It is a systemic treatment, meaning the medicines travel through the bloodstream. Chemotherapy may be offered when surgery is not suitable, around another treatment, or to reduce symptoms caused by tumour growth. Immunotherapy may also be considered for some people.

Mesothelioma most often develops in the lining around the lungs, but it can arise in another body lining. The care team considers the tumour site, cell type, how far it has grown, breathing health, kidney function, symptoms and previous therapy before recommending treatment.

For disease around the lungs, symptom control may also require procedures to manage fluid around a lung. Those procedures address pressure and breathlessness but do not replace systemic treatment directed at the cancer itself.

Ask the oncologist to explain the treatment aim and why chemotherapy is preferred over, or combined with, other options. Provide an up-to-date list of medicines and supplements, and mention kidney disease, hearing problems, numbness, reduced appetite or recent weight change.

Plan how to reach the treatment unit after hours. Track breathlessness, chest or abdominal discomfort, food and fluid intake, and treatment effects. Early supportive care can help manage symptoms alongside cancer-directed therapy.

Contact the oncology team without delay for fever, shaking chills, worsening breathlessness, new chest pain, persistent vomiting, inability to drink, confusion or much less urine than usual. During chemotherapy, these changes may reflect infection, dehydration, fluid build-up or an effect on organ function.

Call emergency services for severe breathing difficulty, collapse, coughing or vomiting blood, sudden intense chest pain, a seizure or swelling of the face and throat. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint or severely short of breath.

Ask which mesothelioma type and cell pattern were found, what chemotherapy is expected to change, how breathing symptoms will be managed, when scans will be reviewed, and what would prompt a switch to another treatment.
