Does chemotherapy treat lymphoma?

Chemotherapy can reach lymphoma cells in lymph nodes, bone marrow and other organs. It may be combined with an antibody medicine or steroids, and sometimes with radiotherapy. Some slow-growing lymphomas do not need treatment immediately if they are not causing problems.

Lymphoma is a broad group of cancers of lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell. A biopsy identifies the subtype, while scans, blood tests and sometimes bone marrow assessment show where it is present. These findings help distinguish disease that needs prompt therapy from disease that can be watched.

The intended result may be long-term remission or control of lymphoma and its symptoms. Age alone does not determine treatment; health conditions, day-to-day function, previous therapy and the lymphoma's features are considered together.

Request the name of your lymphoma subtype and a written treatment schedule. Tell the team about infections, vaccinations, medicines and supplements. Ask before receiving a vaccine or starting any over-the-counter product because timing and interactions can matter during treatment.

At home, monitor for fever, chills, mouth problems, bowel changes, new numbness or unexpected bruising. Use the treatment unit's contact route for concerning effects rather than waiting until the next scheduled appointment.

Seek urgent advice from the oncology team for fever, shaking, new breathlessness, persistent vomiting or diarrhoea, unusual bleeding, a painful rash or rapidly worsening weakness. Reduced infection-fighting cells can make an infection serious before there are many symptoms.

Emergency care is needed for severe trouble breathing, collapse, a seizure, heavy uncontrolled bleeding or swelling of the face, lips or throat. Bring your treatment details if it is safe and practical to do so.

Ask whether treatment should start now, which medicines are included, whether the aim is remission or disease control, how response will be measured, and whether treatment could affect fertility, work or planned travel.
