Does chemotherapy treat liver metastases?

Medicines circulate through the body and can reach cancer cells in the liver as well as elsewhere. Treatment may aim to shrink or control tumours, ease cancer-related symptoms, or make another treatment such as surgery more feasible.

Liver metastases are cancer cells that travelled from another organ; they are not the same as cancer that began in the liver. For example, cells that spread from the bowel retain features of bowel cancer. The oncology team therefore selects chemotherapy according to the primary cancer and its biological features.

The number and position of liver tumours, cancer elsewhere in the body, liver function, previous therapy and overall fitness also shape the recommendation. Chemotherapy can be used alone or alongside local options chosen by a specialist team.

Confirm where the cancer started and whether tumour testing affects the medicine choice. Ask what the treatment is intended to achieve, how scans and blood tests will track response, and which alternatives might be considered if the tumours do not respond.

Give the team a complete list of medicines and supplements. Report jaundice, increasing abdominal swelling, worsening pain, poor intake or marked tiredness because these changes may affect assessment, supportive care or dosing.

While receiving chemotherapy, contact the treatment unit urgently for fever, chills, persistent vomiting or diarrhoea, new jaundice, unusual bleeding, confusion or rapidly increasing abdominal swelling. These symptoms can signal infection, dehydration, impaired liver function or another complication that needs assessment.

Use emergency services for severe breathing difficulty, collapse, vomiting blood, black stools, sudden severe abdominal pain or a seizure. Follow the oncology unit's instructions for out-of-hours concerns.

You may want to ask which primary cancer the treatment targets, whether the liver tumours can be treated locally, what scan changes would alter the plan, and whom to call if side effects begin between appointments.
