Does chemotherapy treat adrenal cancer?

Surgery is often considered when the tumour can be removed. Drug treatment may then be used to control cancer cells elsewhere, lower the chance of regrowth in selected situations or ease problems caused by advancing disease.

Adrenal cancers do not all behave in the same way. The plan depends on the tumour type, where it is, whether it makes excess hormones, whether it has spread and what treatment has already been given.

Chemotherapy can be combined with a medicine that blocks adrenal hormone production or acts directly on adrenal tissue. Scans, symptoms and hormone tests may help the team judge whether treatment is controlling the disease. Side effects and day-to-day function also influence whether the plan continues.

Give the oncology team a complete list of medicines, including hormone replacements and supplements. Mention high blood pressure, diabetes, heart concerns and symptoms of excess hormones because these can affect monitoring and supportive care.

Take prescribed steroid or hormone replacement exactly as directed, and never stop it suddenly unless the treating team tells you how. Keep notes on nausea, appetite, bowel changes, energy and pain so emerging problems can be addressed between scans.

Contact the cancer team promptly for fever, chills, persistent vomiting, worsening abdominal or back pain, new swelling, severe dizziness or difficulty taking hormone tablets. These symptoms may reflect infection, treatment effects or a hormone imbalance that needs assessment.

Seek emergency care for collapse, confusion, severe weakness, major breathing difficulty, chest pain, vomiting with inability to keep fluids down or a sudden severe headache with vision changes.

Ask what type of adrenal cancer you have, what chemotherapy is intended to achieve, whether hormone-blocking treatment is included, how response and hormone levels will be monitored, and which symptoms require the emergency contact number.
