Does chemical peel treat perioral hyperpigmentation?

Perioral hyperpigmentation is darker skin around the mouth. It may follow irritation from saliva, lip products, hair removal, friction, acne, or an inflammatory rash. A peel can shed some pigmented surface cells, but it cannot correct an ongoing trigger. Skin around the lips is also sensitive, so excessive strength or repeated irritation can make colour changes more noticeable rather than less.

Ask a dermatologist to examine the pattern and check for dermatitis or another cause before scheduling a peel. Stop products that sting, avoid picking and waxing the area when it is irritated, and use a bland moisturiser. If treatment is appropriate, follow the specified preparation and aftercare, keep the peel away from the lips unless directed, and protect the area from sunlight. Improvement is usually assessed after the skin has fully settled, not during peeling.

Get medical advice if the darkening is new and rapidly spreading, itchy, scaly, cracked, painful, or associated with swelling. After treatment, contact the clinic for blistering, severe burning, increasing tenderness, or a rash extending beyond the treated area.
