Does chemical peel treat hyperpigmentation?

Hyperpigmentation is an umbrella term for areas that look darker than surrounding skin. It can follow acne, eczema, injury, hair removal, inflammation, or repeated sunlight exposure. A peel removes or loosens some surface cells and may make tone look more even, but pigment deeper in the skin may need another approach.

The same treatment can behave differently across skin tones and diagnoses. An overly irritating peel may cause new inflammation and additional darkening, so the clinician needs to identify the pattern, location, and recent skin treatments before proceeding.

Start with an examination rather than treating every dark mark in the same way. Tell the clinician about acne, rashes, medicines, pregnancy, hair removal, and previous reactions. Use broad sun protection for exposed areas, avoid picking, and follow the prescribed preparation and aftercare. Introduce other pigment products only when the clinician gives a clear schedule.

Seek medical advice if a dark patch changes quickly, bleeds, becomes painful, develops a new lump, or has persistent scale or itch. After a peel, obtain prompt advice for severe pain, blistering, open skin, infection-like drainage, or rapidly worsening colour change.

Ask which type of hyperpigmentation you have, whether a peel is appropriate, and how your skin tone affects the plan. Clarify preparation, sun protection, recovery, warning signs, and what will be tried if the colour does not respond or returns.
