Does cheilitis cause chapped lips?

Cheilitis means inflammation of the lips. It may affect the outer lip, the corners, or both. Irritation from licking, saliva, wind, dry air, lip products, toothpaste, or food contact can damage the protective barrier. Some forms are linked with allergy, infection, medication, or another skin condition. Chapped Lips is a very common presentation of Cheilitis, but dry or cracked lips can also follow simple environmental exposure. Burning, crusting, bleeding, blisters, or cracks at the corners can help a clinician work out the pattern and possible trigger.

Use a bland, fragrance-free ointment to reduce water loss and reapply after eating or drinking. Avoid licking, biting, peeling flakes, and products that sting, tingle, or contain fragrance. Pause new lip cosmetics, balms, and toothpaste if symptoms began after introducing them, and protect your lips from wind and strong sun. Drink normally and avoid putting steroid, antibiotic, or antifungal products on the lips unless a clinician has advised the specific product and duration.

Arrange medical review if cracking persists despite gentle care, keeps returning, spreads beyond the lips, or causes repeated bleeding. Seek prompt help for marked swelling, pus, spreading warmth, fever, painful blisters, or trouble breathing or swallowing. Persistent changes on one lip, a firm sore, or an area that does not heal should be examined rather than repeatedly covered with balm.
