Does cervical screening test treat cervical ectropion?

Cervical screening collects cells from the cervix to look for changes associated with cervical cancer risk. It is a check, not a treatment for cervical ectropion. Ectropion describes glandular cells appearing on the outer cervix, where they may produce mucus or bleed easily. A screening result can be reassuring while ectropion symptoms remain, because the two issues are assessed for different reasons. The examination may also help a clinician notice an ectropion or another visible cause of bleeding.

Attend screening when it is due and follow any result instructions. If you have discharge, bleeding after sex, or ongoing irritation, arrange a separate clinical review rather than waiting for screening. A clinician may check for infection and examine the cervix. When symptoms are mild, observation may be appropriate. If symptoms continue and ectropion is considered responsible after other causes are excluded, a clinician can discuss treatment options designed to reduce the exposed glandular tissue.

Seek prompt care for bleeding that is persistent, increasing, or occurs during pregnancy, or for pelvic pain, fever, or foul-smelling discharge. Contact the service that performed screening if you receive an abnormal result or are unsure about the recommended follow-up. Screening should not delay assessment of symptoms.
