Does cervical radiculopathy cause shoulder pain?

Cervical radiculopathy happens when a nerve root leaving the neck becomes irritated or compressed. The nerve may produce aching, burning, or electric pain that spreads toward the shoulder, upper back, or arm. Neck movement, coughing, or prolonged desk posture can sometimes make the symptoms more noticeable. Shoulder pain can also come from the shoulder joint, muscles, or other nerves, so its location alone cannot identify the source. A clinician compares neck movement, shoulder movement, strength, sensation, and reflexes to separate these possibilities.

Record when the pain began, where it travels, and whether neck position changes it. Keep the neck and shoulder gently moving within a comfortable range, and vary positions instead of staying hunched over for long periods. Avoid activities that sharply increase radiating pain or cause new weakness. A medical assessment can guide options such as targeted exercises, activity changes, or pain relief that suits your health history.

Arrange prompt medical care for worsening arm or shoulder weakness, increasing numbness, loss of hand coordination, or pain that is severe and not settling. Seek urgent help after a significant injury, or if neck symptoms occur with trouble walking, loss of bladder or bowel control, or widespread weakness. These features need assessment because they can indicate more extensive nerve or spinal involvement.
