Does cervical fusion treat cervical radiculopathy?

Cervical radiculopathy is irritation or compression of a nerve root in the neck, often causing pain, tingling, numbness or weakness travelling into the shoulder, arm or hand. Fusion may be considered when a disc or bone change is removed and the space between vertebrae needs support, or when neck pain and instability accompany the nerve compression. Many people are first offered non-surgical care such as activity adjustment, prescribed medicine or physiotherapy. The decision depends on the examination, imaging, symptom pattern and response to earlier treatment.

A clinician can compare your arm symptoms with the affected nerve level and check strength, reflexes and sensation. Keep a record of movements that worsen symptoms and any weakness affecting grip or lifting. Discuss whether observation, targeted treatment or surgery is appropriate, what decompression would involve, and how fusion could affect neck movement and rehabilitation. Do not ignore progressive weakness even if pain is manageable.

Seek prompt assessment if arm or hand weakness is increasing, objects are slipping from your grip, or numbness is spreading. Emergency care is needed after a significant neck injury, or for new trouble walking, widespread weakness, or bladder or bowel control changes. Severe neck pain with fever also requires urgent evaluation.
