Does cervical fusion treat cervical myelopathy?

Cervical myelopathy occurs when the spinal cord is compressed in the neck. Surgery commonly has two aims: relieve pressure on the cord and maintain or restore stability. Fusion joins selected vertebrae after the surgeon removes a source of compression or creates space for the cord. The exact operation depends on the levels involved, spinal alignment, discs, bone changes and symptoms. Treatment may protect remaining spinal cord function and improve some problems, but established nerve damage may not fully reverse. Fusion itself does not treat every cause of hand clumsiness, balance trouble or weakness.

Arrange a specialist review if you notice worsening hand coordination, dropping objects, changes in walking balance, limb weakness or altered sensation. Bring a timeline of symptoms and a list of medicines. Ask how imaging identifies the compressed levels, whether decompression is needed with fusion, and what restrictions and physiotherapy are expected after surgery. Avoid high-risk neck manipulation until the cause of spinal cord symptoms is clarified.

Seek urgent medical attention for rapidly worsening weakness, new difficulty walking, loss of hand function, or problems controlling bladder or bowel function. After a neck injury, severe neck pain with weakness or numbness also needs emergency assessment. These signs can indicate significant nerve or spinal cord involvement.
