Does cervical dysplasia cause bleeding after sex?

Cervical dysplasia means abnormal cells have been found on the cervix. The altered surface may be more delicate and can bleed after contact during sex. Cervical ectropion, infection, dryness, polyps, or other cervical changes can also cause bleeding, so the symptom cannot identify its cause on its own.

A clinician may ask about timing, amount, pain, discharge, contraception, pregnancy possibility, and screening history. They may examine the vagina and cervix and arrange tests such as a pregnancy test, infection testing, cervical screening, or colposcopy when appropriate.

Arrange a medical appointment if bleeding after sex is new, repeats, or concerns you. Keep a note of when it happens and whether it follows penetration, and mention any pelvic pain or unusual discharge. Follow-up for an abnormal cervical screening result matters even when you feel well.

Until you are assessed, use gentle lubrication if dryness may be contributing and avoid inserting products that irritate the vagina. Do not delay an appointment by assuming the bleeding is from dysplasia or from a harmless cause.

Seek urgent medical help for heavy or ongoing bleeding, faintness, severe pelvic or abdominal pain, fever, or bleeding during pregnancy. These features need prompt evaluation because they can signal a problem requiring treatment, regardless of whether cervical dysplasia is present.
