Does cervical cerclage treat cervical insufficiency?

Cervical insufficiency means the cervix may shorten or open too early without typical labour symptoms. A cerclage places a strong stitch around the cervix to help it stay closed. It is a preventive or supportive procedure, not a cure for every cause of early cervical change.

A specialist considers pregnancy history, examination findings, cervical length, gestational stage, contractions, bleeding, infection, and whether the membranes have changed. The stitch may be placed through the vagina or, in selected situations, by another surgical approach.

Discuss your individual risks and options with an obstetric team. Before the procedure, ask about preparation, anaesthesia, activity guidance, warning symptoms, and the planned timing for removal. Follow the team’s instructions about medicines and follow-up scans.

Contact your maternity unit urgently for regular tightening, leaking fluid, vaginal bleeding, fever, worsening pelvic pressure, or unusual discharge after cerclage. These symptoms can require assessment for labour, infection, or membrane problems.
