Does cervical cancer cause bleeding after sex?

Cervical cancer can make the cervix more fragile, so contact during sex may cause spotting or bleeding. Irritation, vaginal dryness, cervical polyps, infections, and changes related to contraception can also cause bleeding. The symptom alone cannot identify its cause or confirm cancer.

The timing, amount, colour, recurrence, pregnancy possibility, and other symptoms help a clinician decide what to check. An examination may include looking at the vagina and cervix and arranging appropriate cervical screening or other tests.

Arrange a medical appointment if bleeding after sex is new, repeated, or unexplained. Record when it happens and whether you have pain, unusual discharge, or bleeding at other times. Do not wait for the next routine screening invitation if the symptom continues.

Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, faintness, severe pelvic pain, fever, or bleeding during pregnancy. Otherwise, prompt routine assessment is appropriate because early evaluation can distinguish cervical changes from non-cancer causes.
