Does cartilage repair surgery treat osteochondritis dissecans?

Osteochondritis dissecans affects a section of bone and the cartilage covering it. In some cases, the area can heal with activity modification and monitoring; in others, the fragment remains loose or the cartilage surface becomes damaged. Surgery is chosen according to the person’s age, lesion stability, symptoms, imaging findings and whether the growth plates are still open. A procedure may secure a viable fragment, stimulate healing, or restore a damaged joint surface. Cartilage repair addresses the joint-surface problem, so the underlying bone and the stability of the lesion also need careful assessment.

Until reviewed, follow advice about limiting impact, twisting and deep loading rather than testing the knee through pain or catching. Your assessment may include movement testing and imaging to see whether the fragment is stable. Discuss the expected period of protected activity, use of crutches if advised, and how physiotherapy will restore range of motion and muscle control.
