Does carpal tunnel syndrome cause wrist pain?

Carpal tunnel discomfort may be worse at night or after activities that keep the wrist flexed, such as prolonged phone use or repetitive hand work. Some people notice symptoms in the palm or forearm as well. Pain caused by an injury, tendon irritation, joint inflammation, or nerve pressure elsewhere can feel similar, so location, movement, sensation, and timing help distinguish possibilities.

Arrange a review when wrist pain persists, returns often, or interferes with sleep or hand use. Rest from aggravating tasks, vary repetitive movements, and keep the wrist in a neutral position. A clinician may assess the wrist, hand, elbow, and neck; treatment can include a night splint, targeted exercises, activity changes, or additional testing depending on the findings.

Seek urgent care for severe pain after a significant injury, a visibly deformed wrist, a cold or discoloured hand, or sudden weakness with speech or facial changes. Prompt assessment is also appropriate when pain is escalating, grip is worsening, or numbness becomes constant.

Ask whether the pain pattern fits median-nerve irritation, whether another wrist structure or the neck could be involved, and which movements to limit temporarily. Describe the exact painful area, whether the pain travels, what brings it on, and whether numbness or tingling occurs at the same time.
