Does carpal tunnel syndrome cause arm numbness and tingling?

The median nerve travels through a confined tunnel at the wrist and supplies feeling to part of the hand. Pressure on this nerve can create pins and needles, reduced sensation, or an electric feeling that is noticed in the hand and may seem to travel into the forearm. Symptoms often appear during sleep or when the wrist stays bent for a while.

Arm symptoms have several possible causes, including irritation of a nerve in the neck or another problem higher in the arm. The location, timing, affected fingers, and associated weakness help a clinician distinguish these possibilities.

Keep a note of when the sensation starts, which fingers are affected, whether it wakes you, and what positions bring it on. Avoid prolonged wrist bending and repeated forceful gripping until you have guidance. A clinician may examine sensation, strength, and neck and wrist movement before suggesting a splint, therapy, testing, or another treatment.

Book an assessment if numbness keeps returning, affects sleep, spreads, or is accompanied by dropping objects or hand weakness. Seek urgent care for sudden arm numbness with facial drooping, trouble speaking, severe chest discomfort, breathing difficulty, or new loss of movement, because these symptoms can signal an emergency unrelated to the wrist.
