Pain management can reduce discomfort, support sleep, and make movement easier. It may combine regular pain medicine, rescue medicine for flares, treatment for nerve pain, and strategies to limit strain on weakened bones. Oncology treatment addresses the deposits themselves or their effects on bone. The exact combination depends on where the metastases are, fracture risk, cancer type, other treatments, and general health.

Report new pain, pain that shifts location, or reduced ability to walk or use a limb. Take pain medicines as prescribed and keep track of breakthrough episodes and side effects. Before changing exercise, lifting, or mobility routines, check whether the affected bones need protection. Your oncology team may coordinate input from pain or palliative care, radiotherapy, bone specialists, physiotherapy, and other clinical services.

Sudden severe pain, a limb that looks abnormal, or inability to bear weight may indicate a fracture and needs urgent assessment. Back pain with new weakness, tingling, numbness around the buttocks or genitals, trouble walking, or loss of bladder or bowel control can signal spinal cord compression. Treat those neurological symptoms as an emergency, even if you already have a pain plan.

Ask which part of the plan relieves symptoms and which part targets the cancer or strengthens vulnerable bone. Clarify whether any limb or spinal area has movement restrictions, how rescue medicine should be used, and how side effects will be managed.
