Does cancer pain cause persistent bone pain?

Cancer-related bone pain may feel deep, aching, tender, or difficult to pinpoint. It can be present at rest, disturb sleep, or become more noticeable with movement or pressure. The way pain feels cannot identify its cause on its own.

Cancer Pain can include bone pain when a tumour affects bone directly or places pressure on nearby tissues. Treatment, reduced movement, an injury, arthritis, or another musculoskeletal problem may produce a similar ache. A clinical assessment helps separate these possibilities.

Useful clues include the exact location, whether the pain is new or changing, what triggers it, whether it wakes you, and whether there is swelling, weakness, numbness, or difficulty bearing weight. These details guide the examination and any imaging that may be needed.

Tell your oncology or primary care team about persistent, new, or worsening bone pain. Note where it starts, whether it spreads, what time it is strongest, and how it affects walking, sleep, and everyday tasks. Bring an up-to-date list of medicines and describe what you have already tried.

Until you are assessed, avoid activities that sharply increase pain or put heavy force through the painful area. Do not add, stop, or increase pain medicines without checking the plan with the clinician managing them, especially if you already take prescription pain relief.

Seek urgent medical care for sudden severe bone or back pain, a limb that looks deformed, inability to stand or bear weight, or pain after a minor movement that could signal a weakened bone. New leg weakness, numbness around the buttocks or genitals, or loss of bladder or bowel control requires emergency assessment because the spinal cord may be under pressure.

Ask what may be causing the pain, whether the painful area needs examination or imaging, which movements are safe, and how to use prescribed pain relief. Also clarify whom to contact after hours if pain suddenly changes or new weakness develops.
