Can blood clots in cancer cause shortness of breath?

Shortness of Breath is a common presentation of Blood Clots in Cancer. A clot can obstruct blood flow through the lungs, making breathing feel difficult or sudden.

Cancer and some cancer treatments can increase the tendency for blood to clot. A clot that travels to the lungs may cause breathlessness, chest discomfort, a fast heartbeat, coughing, or light-headedness. The symptoms can begin suddenly, but they may also build over time. Other causes include infection, anaemia, heart problems, or the cancer itself, so symptoms need clinical assessment rather than self-diagnosis.

Contact your oncology team or a medical service promptly about new breathlessness, especially if you have cancer, a recent procedure, reduced mobility, or a previous clot. Do not massage a painful swollen leg or start someone else’s anticoagulant. A clinician may check your oxygen level, heart rate, lungs, and legs before deciding whether urgent tests or treatment are needed.

Call emergency services immediately for severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, blue or grey lips, confusion, or coughing blood. Sit upright, avoid exertion, and follow the emergency operator’s instructions while waiting. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint or cannot breathe comfortably.
