Does blood clots in cancer cause arm or leg swelling?

The swelling may affect one limb and can occur with aching, tenderness, warmth, heaviness or a change in skin colour. Swelling also has other causes, so the symptom needs clinical assessment rather than self-diagnosis.

A clot in a deep vein can partly or fully block the route that carries blood back toward the heart. Fluid then builds up in nearby tissues, making the arm or leg look or feel swollen. Cancer and some cancer treatments can make clotting more likely, but swelling can also arise from infection, injury, lymphatic blockage or other medical problems.

A clinician may compare both limbs, examine the skin and circulation, review medicines and treatment history, and arrange imaging when a clot is suspected.

Contact your oncology team or another clinician promptly if an arm or leg becomes newly swollen, particularly when only one side is affected or the area is painful, warm or discoloured. Note when it began, whether it is worsening, and whether you recently had surgery, reduced mobility, a central line or a change in cancer treatment.

Do not massage the swollen limb or start compression garments before a clot has been assessed. If anticoagulant medicine is prescribed, take it exactly as directed and report unusual bleeding.

Call emergency services for sudden shortness of breath, chest pain, coughing up blood, fainting, severe dizziness or a fast heartbeat. These symptoms can occur if a clot travels to the lungs and require urgent assessment.

Rapidly increasing swelling, severe limb pain, a cold or pale limb, or new weakness also warrants urgent medical attention. Do not wait for a routine cancer appointment when these warning signs appear.

Ask whether the swelling needs an ultrasound or other imaging, whether any current medicine changes clotting or bleeding risk, what activity is appropriate, and which symptoms should trigger emergency care. If treatment begins, clarify how to take it around procedures and what bleeding signs to report.
