Does calcific tendinitis cause shoulder pain?

Short answer
Shoulder pain is a common presentation of calcific tendinitis, although shoulder pain can have many other causes.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Typical area
- Shoulder, often involving a rotator-cuff tendon
- Common effects
- Pain, stiffness and difficulty with overhead movement
What calcific tendinitis can feel like
Calcific tendinitis occurs when calcium collects in a shoulder tendon, often within the rotator cuff. The deposit can irritate nearby tissue and make lifting, reaching behind your back or lying on that side uncomfortable. Pain may be aching and persistent, or it may become severe during a flare. Stiffness and reduced movement can accompany the pain.
Most people with calcific tendinitis notice shoulder pain, but the symptom does not identify the cause by itself. A clinician may examine your movement and strength and may use an X-ray or ultrasound to look for a deposit and assess other shoulder problems.
What you can do
Reduce movements that sharply increase pain for a short time, while keeping the shoulder gently moving within a comfortable range. Cold or heat may help, depending on which feels better. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether an appropriate pain-relief medicine is suitable for you.
If symptoms continue, assessment can guide treatment. Options may include physiotherapy, medication, an injection, or a procedure to wash out or break up the deposit. The choice depends on your examination, imaging and how much the pain limits sleep or daily tasks.
When to seek care
Arrange medical assessment if shoulder pain persists, restricts movement, keeps returning or interferes with sleep, dressing or work. Seek urgent help after a significant injury, or if you cannot move the arm, the shoulder looks deformed, or the arm becomes numb, unusually cold or weak.
Get prompt care for shoulder pain with fever, marked redness or swelling, chest discomfort, shortness of breath or pain spreading into the jaw or arm. These features can point to problems outside the tendon and should not be assessed only as calcific tendinitis.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your examination suggests a tendon deposit or another shoulder problem, whether imaging is needed, and which movements are safe while the shoulder settles. You can also ask how long to try physiotherapy, what improvement to expect from each treatment option, and which warning signs should prompt earlier review.

Questions people ask
Can calcific tendinitis cause sudden severe pain?
Yes. Irritation around a calcium deposit can produce a sudden flare with intense pain and restricted movement.
Does every shoulder pain episode come from calcific tendinitis?
No. Shoulder pain has several possible causes, so an examination and sometimes imaging are needed to identify the source.
