Does bunion surgery treat bunions?

A bunion is an alignment problem involving the big toe and the joint behind it. The goal is to improve alignment and reduce pressure, pain, and difficulty with shoes.

There is no single operation for every bunion. The choice depends on the angle and flexibility of the deformity, arthritis, activity demands, and the condition of the skin and circulation. Surgery does not make the foot immune to future symptoms, and swelling can continue while the repair heals.
