Does bullous pemphigoid cause skin blisters?

Most people with Bullous Pemphigoid notice skin blisters. The blisters are often firm or tense because they form beneath the outermost layer of skin. They may arise on the abdomen, limbs, groin, or other areas and can be preceded by an itchy or hive-like rash.

Bullous pemphigoid is linked to the immune system targeting proteins that help hold skin layers together. Other blistering conditions, infections, medicines, burns, and friction can look similar, so the appearance alone cannot confirm the diagnosis. A clinician may need a skin examination and specialised testing.

Do not deliberately burst blisters or peel the skin over them. Keep areas clean, protect them from friction, and use dressings advised by a healthcare professional. Tell the clinician about new medicines, itching, mouth or eye symptoms, and any wounds that are becoming more painful.

Treatment is chosen according to the extent of blistering and overall health. It may include prescribed anti-inflammatory or immune-directed medicines and wound care. Follow the plan closely and attend reviews so the skin and treatment effects can be monitored.

Arrange prompt medical assessment for new unexplained blisters, particularly if they are widespread, recurrent, or very itchy. Seek urgent help for blisters involving the eyes or mouth, rapidly worsening pain, fever, pus, dehydration, breathing difficulty, or signs of a severe medicine reaction.
