Does bronchiolitis cause fever?

Bronchiolitis usually begins like a cold and then affects the small airways. Fever reflects the body’s response to infection, while airway swelling and mucus can cause cough, wheezing, and breathing effort. Some children have little or no fever, so temperature alone does not show how severe the illness is. A child’s breathing, hydration, alertness, and feeding are more useful features to monitor alongside temperature.

Check the child regularly and offer frequent fluids or breastfeeds. Keep clothing light and the room comfortable; avoid cold baths or rubbing the skin with alcohol. Use fever medicine only when suitable for the child’s age and according to a clinician’s or pharmacist’s instructions. Never give aspirin to a child. Clear a blocked nose gently before feeding and record changes in breathing or intake.

Seek urgent help if the child has difficult or paused breathing, blue or grey lips, unusual sleepiness, a seizure, or cannot drink. Contact a clinician promptly if feeding drops, wet nappies become less frequent, fever persists, or the child is getting worse. A very young infant with a fever needs prompt medical advice even when other symptoms seem mild.
