Does bronchiectasis cause shortness of breath?

Bronchiectasis damages and widens parts of the breathing tubes. Mucus may sit in these airways, while inflammation narrows the space available for airflow. You may notice breathlessness when walking, climbing stairs, or trying to clear mucus. Cough, phlegm, tiredness, and repeated chest infections can occur alongside it. Breathlessness can also have other causes, so its presence alone does not identify bronchiectasis.

Arrange a clinical assessment if breathlessness is new, persistent, or interfering with ordinary activities. A clinician may listen to your chest, review infections and mucus, and consider breathing tests or imaging. Follow your prescribed airway-clearance plan, drink fluids as advised, avoid smoke, and use inhalers only as directed. During a flare, contact your healthcare team promptly because treatment may need adjustment.

Seek urgent medical help for severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, blue or grey lips, confusion, fainting, chest pain, or difficulty speaking in full sentences. Prompt assessment is also sensible when breathing becomes harder with fever, a marked change in phlegm, or coughing blood. These warning signs need assessment for infection or another serious breathing problem.
