Does breast ultrasound treat fibrocystic breast changes?

Fibrocystic breast changes can make breast tissue feel lumpy, tender, or more nodular, sometimes with fluid-filled cysts. An ultrasound uses sound waves to create images of the tissue. It can help distinguish a fluid-filled cyst from a solid area and may be useful when a new lump needs assessment. The scan does not remove cysts, change hormone-related breast tenderness, or prevent future lumpy areas.

Many fibrocystic changes are benign, but a new, persistent, or changing lump still deserves clinical assessment. The imaging result is interpreted alongside your examination and symptoms.

Arrange an appointment if you have noticed a new breast lump, focal pain, nipple discharge, or a change in the skin or nipple. A clinician may examine both breasts and decide whether ultrasound, another imaging test, or follow-up is appropriate. Wear comfortable clothing for the visit and describe when the change began, whether it varies with your menstrual cycle, and any medicines or hormonal treatment you use.

If an ultrasound shows a simple cyst that is causing discomfort, treatment may involve observation or drainage, depending on the finding and your symptoms. Do not attempt to squeeze or puncture a lump yourself.

Seek prompt medical advice for a lump that remains after your period, grows, feels fixed, or is associated with skin dimpling, nipple inversion, bloody discharge, redness, warmth, or swelling. Seek urgent help for severe breast pain with fever, rapidly spreading redness, or feeling acutely unwell. These signs need assessment because infection and other breast conditions can require treatment beyond imaging.

Ask what the ultrasound found, whether the area is cystic or solid, and whether any follow-up is needed. You can also ask what may ease cyclical tenderness, whether a painful cyst should be drained, and which breast changes should prompt an earlier review.
