Does breast ultrasound treat fibroadenoma?

A fibroadenoma is a solid breast lump made of fibrous and glandular tissue. Ultrasound can show its shape, margins, and relationship to nearby tissue, but sound waves do not remove it. If the appearance and clinical assessment are reassuring, monitoring may be discussed. A growing, painful, large, or uncertain lump may lead to tissue sampling or removal. A breast lump can have different causes, so a new or changing lump deserves assessment.

Arrange an examination for a new lump and bring earlier scans if available. Ask whether the ultrasound appearance fits fibroadenoma, whether a sample is needed, and how follow-up will track change. Tell the clinician about pregnancy, breastfeeding, medicines, and any rapid growth or discomfort. Do not repeatedly press the lump to check it.

Seek prompt review for a lump that enlarges, becomes fixed, or changes the breast shape, or for nipple discharge, skin dimpling, redness, or nipple inversion. Seek urgent help for fever with a hot swollen breast, severe illness, fainting, or breathing difficulty.
