Does breast ultrasound treat breast cyst?

A cyst is a fluid-filled area in the breast. Ultrasound helps show whether a lump is fluid-filled or solid and whether its appearance is reassuring. A simple cyst may need no procedure if it causes no trouble. If it is painful, large, or unclear, a clinician may discuss needle aspiration, further testing, or review. Draining a cyst can reduce pressure, but a cyst can refill and a new lump can have a different cause.

Arrange an assessment for a new lump, even if it feels smooth or changes with your cycle. Bring prior imaging for comparison. Ask what type of cyst is present, whether observation is suitable, and what follow-up is needed. Do not try to puncture or squeeze the lump yourself. Report persistent pain, recurrence, or a change in its size.

Seek prompt care for a rapidly enlarging lump, redness and warmth, fever, bloody discharge, skin dimpling, or a newly inverted nipple. Obtain urgent help for severe illness, fainting, or breathing difficulty. After aspiration, contact the clinic if swelling, redness, pain, or fever increases.

Ask whether the cyst is simple or complex, whether it needs drainage or sampling, how recurrence will be handled, and when you should return.
