Does breast cancer cause breast skin changes?

Breast Skin Changes is a common presentation of Breast Cancer, although many skin changes have other causes. Dimpling, puckering, thickening, persistent redness, or a new change in nipple position should be examined rather than judged from appearance alone.

Breast cancer may affect the tissue beneath the skin and alter the way the surface looks or feels. Possible changes include an indentation, an area resembling orange peel, scaling around the nipple, or skin that becomes thicker or unusually warm. These signs can overlap with infection, eczema, irritation, or normal hormonal variation.

A clinician will compare both breasts and ask whether the change appeared suddenly, is spreading, or varies with your cycle. They may examine the nipple and armpit and arrange imaging or a skin or breast biopsy when the findings require closer investigation.

Make an appointment for a new skin or nipple change that does not settle, particularly if it affects one breast or accompanies a lump, discharge, or swelling. Take a clear note of when it began and whether there was a new product, injury, breastfeeding change, or rash before it appeared.

Do not rely on creams or repeated self-checking to explain a persistent change. At the visit, describe itching, pain, warmth, scaling, and any change in nipple direction; these details help guide the examination and next test.

Seek prompt assessment for new dimpling, puckering, marked thickening, a persistent rash on the nipple, new nipple inversion, or redness and swelling that do not improve. Urgent care is appropriate when breast redness is rapidly spreading or comes with fever or feeling faint.
