Does a breast biopsy treat intraductal papilloma?

An intraductal papilloma is a small growth within a milk duct. It may be linked with nipple discharge or found during breast imaging. A needle biopsy collects tissue for laboratory examination, helping clinicians determine whether the sampled area is a papilloma and whether there are additional cell changes.

Sampling and treatment are different decisions. A needle biopsy may leave the papilloma in place. Depending on the pathology result, symptoms, imaging appearance, and the amount of tissue obtained, your team may recommend observation, more sampling, or a procedure to remove the affected duct or growth.

Attend the recommended imaging or biopsy appointment and tell the clinician about nipple discharge, a new lump, pregnancy, breastfeeding, or medicines that affect bleeding.
