Does a breast biopsy treat fibroadenoma?

A fibroadenoma is a solid breast lump made from glandular and connective tissue. A biopsy removes a small sample, often with a needle, so a laboratory can examine the cells. This can confirm whether the lump has features of fibroadenoma and distinguish it from other breast conditions. A core biopsy normally leaves most of the lump in place.

Some procedures can remove more tissue, but whether removal is appropriate depends on the examination, imaging, pathology result, size, growth, symptoms, and your preferences. A confirmed fibroadenoma may be monitored when it is stable and does not cause problems.

Ask how the lump was assessed and whether tissue sampling is recommended. Before a biopsy, discuss bruising, bleeding, infection, scarring, pain control, and when results are expected. Afterward, follow the dressing instructions and avoid strenuous activity if advised. A growing, uncomfortable, or concerning lump may lead to a discussion about removal rather than biopsy alone.
