Does a breast abscess cause a breast lump?

A breast abscess is a collection of infected fluid in breast tissue. It may produce a tender, swollen lump with warmth or redness over the skin. Some people also have fever, chills, fatigue, or a feeling of pressure. The lump may feel soft in the middle or firm around the edges, although touch alone cannot identify its cause.

Most breast lumps are not abscesses. Cysts, fibroadenomas, hormonal changes, inflammation, and other conditions can also create a lump. An examination and, when needed, imaging help distinguish these possibilities.

Book a clinical assessment for a new, painful, red, or enlarging lump. The clinician may examine the breast and recommend imaging or drainage if an abscess is suspected. Do not squeeze or puncture the area. Wear supportive clothing, keep the skin clean, and use pain relief only if it is suitable for you and used as directed.

Seek same-day medical advice for a painful lump with redness, warmth, fever, chills, or rapidly worsening swelling. Get urgent help if you feel very unwell, become faint or confused, or notice spreading redness. Any new lump that persists, changes, or is associated with nipple inversion, skin dimpling, or unusual discharge also needs assessment.
