Does brachytherapy treat prostate cancer?

It may be used on its own or with external beam radiotherapy, depending on the cancer's characteristics and extent. Prostate size, urinary function, previous procedures and general health also affect whether this approach is suitable.

One technique places small radioactive seeds in the prostate, where they release radiation over time. Another inserts temporary tubes so a stronger source can enter for a planned treatment and then be removed.

Needles or tubes are guided through the skin between the scrotum and anus while you have anaesthesia. Ultrasound and treatment planning help position the radiation within the prostate and reduce exposure to nearby tissues. Tell the team about urinary difficulty, prior prostate or pelvic treatment, blood-thinning medicines, implanted devices and allergies. Follow their directions on food, fluids, bowel preparation and which medicines to take before anaesthesia.

Contact the treating team without delay if you cannot pass urine, develop fever or chills, have worsening pelvic pain, pass heavy blood or clots, or notice increasing redness, swelling or discharge near an insertion site.

Seek emergency help for chest pain, sudden shortness of breath, fainting or uncontrolled bleeding. Do not wait for a routine follow-up if a new symptom is severe or rapidly worsening.
