Does bone-strengthening therapy treat high calcium in cancer?

Cancer can increase bone breakdown or release signals that change the way the body controls calcium. Excess calcium then moves into the bloodstream. Bisphosphonates and denosumab act on cells involved in bone breakdown, helping the calcium level fall after immediate fluid treatment has begun.

The medicine does not treat dehydration straight away and does not replace therapy for the cancer causing the problem. Blood tests are repeated because calcium can fall too far or rise again, and kidney results influence which medicine can be used.

The clinical team will review symptoms, medicines, fluid intake and blood results. Tell them about kidney disease, dental concerns, heart problems and all supplements, including calcium and vitamin D. Do not stop prescribed medicine or force extra fluids unless the treating team advises it.

Once the level improves, follow the blood-test schedule and cancer-treatment plan provided. Recurring thirst, constipation, weakness or mental changes should be reported early because another calcium check may be needed.

Seek urgent medical assessment for new confusion, unusual drowsiness, repeated vomiting, severe weakness, inability to keep fluids down or a major reduction in urination. These symptoms can accompany a substantially raised calcium level or dehydration and should not wait for a routine cancer appointment.
