Can boils cause painful armpit lumps?

A boil often begins as a sore, firm, red area and may become warmer, larger, or filled with pus as inflammation develops. The armpit can be affected because it contains hair follicles, sweat glands, and skin folds that experience friction. A painful lump can also come from an inflamed cyst, swollen lymph node, or another skin condition, so its appearance alone cannot identify the cause.

Keep the area clean, avoid squeezing or puncturing the lump, and use a clean warm compress for short periods if it is comfortable. Do not share towels or razors if drainage is present. A clinician can decide whether the boil needs drainage, a swab, or medicine, especially if it is large, recurring, spreading, or not settling.

Seek prompt care for fever, chills, rapidly spreading redness, red streaks, severe pain, marked weakness, or a lump near the breast. Arrange an examination for a recurrent underarm lump, several connected lesions, or drainage that continues. Urgent assessment is appropriate if you feel seriously unwell.
