Does blood transfusion support treat aplastic anaemia?

Red blood cell transfusions may reduce symptoms linked to anaemia, while platelet transfusions may be used when a very low platelet count or bleeding creates concern. The haematology team selects the component according to symptoms, test results and the treatment plan.

Aplastic anaemia is a bone marrow failure condition. The marrow does not make enough blood cells, which can lead to tiredness and breathlessness from low red cells, bleeding or bruising from low platelets, and infection risk from low white cells.

Transfusion replaces selected cells already circulating in the blood; it does not correct low white cells and does not make the marrow recover. The benefit can therefore be temporary. Treatment directed at the marrow may be needed alongside transfusion support, depending on the individual situation.

Follow the haematology team's blood-testing schedule and report new symptoms rather than waiting for the next appointment. Avoid starting medicines or supplements without checking, because some products can affect bleeding or interact with treatment. Use a soft toothbrush and take care to prevent cuts if platelets are low.

Before a planned transfusion, mention any previous reaction, pregnancy history and changes in medicines. Ask which blood component is being given, how response will be measured, and whether compatible blood may require additional preparation because repeated transfusions are anticipated.

Contact the treatment team urgently for fever, shaking chills, new bleeding, blood in urine or stool, many new pinpoint red spots, or rapidly worsening weakness or breathlessness. Call emergency services for severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, fainting, confusion, bleeding that will not stop or a severe headache with neurological changes.

A fever, rash, chills, breathing difficulty, back or chest pain, dark urine or sudden illness during or after transfusion may signal a reaction. Alert staff immediately or seek urgent advice if already home.

Consider asking which counts are low, what symptoms each transfusion is intended to address, how often monitoring is needed, and what the longer-term marrow treatment aims to achieve. Clarify whom to call overnight for fever or bleeding and whether any daily activity should be modified.
