Does blood transfusion support treat anaemia in cancer?

Transfused red blood cells raise the supply of oxygen-carrying cells. Doctors consider the blood count alongside breathlessness, fatigue, dizziness, bleeding, heart or lung conditions and the person's cancer treatment before recommending it.

Anaemia means there are too few healthy red blood cells or too little haemoglobin to carry oxygen efficiently. In someone with cancer, it can result from the disease, bleeding, reduced production in bone marrow, treatment effects, nutritional deficiency or a combination of factors.

A transfusion replaces cells rather than prompting the body to make them. Its benefit may fade as transfused cells are naturally cleared or if bleeding, marrow suppression or another cause continues. Identifying that cause helps the team decide whether another treatment is needed as well.

Describe how symptoms affect walking, washing, work, sleep and eating, and report any visible bleeding or dark stools. Bring an up-to-date medicine list and tell the team about previous transfusions or reactions. Blood tests can help distinguish anaemia from other reasons for tiredness or breathlessness.

If transfusion is advised, the team checks compatibility and monitors you during administration. Ask why it is recommended now, what improvement to look for and whether the plan also includes managing bleeding, a deficiency, treatment effects or the cancer itself.

Get urgent help for chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting, confusion, heavy bleeding or sudden profound weakness. Notify the oncology team promptly about fever, worsening breathlessness, a fast heartbeat at rest, new dizziness or bleeding that does not settle.

While receiving blood or after leaving the unit, report fever, chills, rash, swelling, breathing trouble, chest or back pain, dark urine or an abrupt unwell feeling. These symptoms require timely assessment for a transfusion reaction.

Useful questions include what is causing the anaemia, whether it is expected to continue, how symptom improvement will be judged, and when repeat blood testing is planned. Ask which side effects need an immediate call and whether any medicine or supplement should be changed.
