Does a blood test treat iron deficiency anaemia?

Blood testing can assess the number and size of red blood cells and measure iron stores. It helps a clinician judge whether low iron is contributing to anaemia, but it does not explain every cause on its own. Heavy menstrual bleeding, low dietary intake, reduced absorption, or blood loss from the digestive tract may need consideration.

A clinician may recommend an oral iron supplement, dietary changes, or another form of replacement when appropriate. Take iron as directed because it can cause nausea, constipation, or darker stools. Do not stop after symptoms improve unless advised; restoring blood counts and iron stores may take time. Follow-up testing checks response and helps identify when further investigation is needed.

Arrange prompt medical review for worsening tiredness, breathlessness, dizziness, paleness, or a pounding heartbeat. Seek urgent help for chest pain, fainting, severe breathlessness at rest, vomiting blood, or black tarry stools, particularly if these symptoms are new or worsening.
