Does a blood test treat gout?

Gout is an inflammatory condition caused by urate crystals forming in and around a joint. A blood test may measure uric acid and look for signs of inflammation or check kidney and liver function before certain medicines are used. A uric acid result is only one part of the assessment: levels can be misleading during a flare, and the result does not by itself confirm that joint pain is gout.

If a joint is suddenly hot, swollen and painful, contact a clinician for a diagnosis and a flare plan. Take medicines only as prescribed, keep a record of attacks and ask whether urate should be rechecked after the flare settles. A clinician may consider joint-fluid testing or imaging when the diagnosis is uncertain. Mention kidney disease, stomach ulcers, blood thinners and all supplements before treatment is chosen.

Seek urgent care for a hot swollen joint with fever or feeling very unwell, because an infection can resemble gout and needs prompt treatment. Obtain urgent help for severe pain with inability to bear weight, rapidly spreading redness, or reduced urine. Do not wait for a blood-test appointment when these warning signs are present.
