Does a blood test treat dengue fever?

Depending on when illness began, blood testing may look for dengue virus material or the immune response to infection. Repeated testing can help clinicians follow platelet and other blood-count changes, hydration, and signs that the illness is becoming more serious. A test result needs to be read alongside fever duration, symptoms, examination and travel or mosquito-exposure history. A blood sample cannot kill the virus or make fever settle immediately.

Care usually focuses on fluids, rest, temperature comfort and close observation. A clinician may advise a suitable fever medicine and explain which medicines to avoid because some can increase bleeding risk. Monitoring matters because a person may need more support as fever changes, even if the initial illness seemed mild.

Arrange medical assessment if dengue is possible, especially after travel or mosquito exposure in an affected area. Drink fluids as advised, rest and record temperature, urine output and new symptoms. Use only fever medicines recommended by a clinician or pharmacist, and avoid aspirin or ibuprofen unless a clinician specifically says they are appropriate. Keep follow-up appointments if repeat blood counts are requested.

Seek urgent care for severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, bleeding from the nose or gums, blood in vomit or stool, marked sleepiness, agitation, difficulty breathing, cold clammy skin or very little urine. These warning signs can occur as fever improves, so do not assume recovery because the temperature falls. Emergency help is needed for collapse or severe breathing difficulty.
