Does blood test treat chronic fatigue syndrome?

Chronic fatigue syndrome, also called myalgic encephalomyelitis, is assessed from the pattern of symptoms, their effect on daily activity, and the exclusion of other explanations. Blood tests may check for problems such as anaemia, thyroid disorders, inflammation, infection, or nutritional deficiency. A normal result does not mean that the person's symptoms are imaginary.

There is no single blood test that confirms or removes chronic fatigue syndrome. Results can point to a separate condition that needs treatment, or help a clinician make a safer supportive plan.

Arrange an appointment if fatigue persists, worsens, or is accompanied by unrefreshing sleep, difficulty concentrating, pain, dizziness, or a marked worsening after activity. Describe your daily energy limits and how long recovery takes after exertion. Bring a medicine and supplement list, and ask which tests are appropriate rather than ordering supplements based on fatigue alone.

Use the activity plan agreed with your clinician, including pacing and planned rest. Avoid pushing through a marked symptom flare while waiting for results.

Seek urgent help for chest pain, severe breathing difficulty, fainting, new confusion, sudden weakness, new speech or vision problems, or thoughts of harming yourself. These symptoms need immediate assessment and should not be attributed to chronic fatigue syndrome without review.

Ask which causes of fatigue are being checked, what the results do and do not show, and when you will review them. Ask how to pace activity safely, what level of exertion to avoid during a flare, and which changes should prompt earlier contact.
