Does blood test treat anaemia?

Anaemia means the blood is carrying less oxygen than the body needs. A blood test can measure haemoglobin and examine features of the blood cells. Further testing may help distinguish causes such as low iron, vitamin deficiency, blood loss, inflammation, or an inherited blood condition.

The result is a starting point, not a cure. Treatment might involve replacing a missing nutrient, addressing bleeding or another illness, or arranging specialist care. Taking iron without confirming that it is needed can delay the right diagnosis and cause side effects.

Arrange a clinical review if a result suggests anaemia or you have symptoms such as unusual tiredness, breathlessness with activity, paleness, headaches, or a fast heartbeat. Bring details of medicines, diet, menstrual or other bleeding, and previous results. Follow the treatment plan and attend any repeat testing requested.
