Does blood pressure medication treat stroke?

A stroke happens when part of the brain is deprived of blood flow or is affected by bleeding. The urgent treatment depends on which type has occurred and how long symptoms have been present. Blood pressure may need careful management during and after a stroke, but changing it too quickly can be unsafe. Later, a clinician may prescribe medication to reduce the chance of another stroke, alongside treatment for other risk factors.

Do not stop, double, or restart a blood pressure tablet without medical advice. The correct medicine and dose depend on your readings, other conditions, and the type of stroke.

If stroke has been diagnosed, take medicines exactly as prescribed and attend follow-up appointments so blood pressure and recovery can be reviewed. Keep a record of readings if your clinician recommends home monitoring. Limit missed doses by linking the tablet to a regular daily routine, and report dizziness, fainting, or new swelling.

If symptoms are happening now, note when they began and call emergency services. Do not drive yourself or wait to see whether the symptoms settle.

Sudden facial drooping, weakness or numbness on one side, trouble speaking, new vision loss, severe imbalance, or a sudden severe headache needs emergency assessment, even if it improves. Symptoms can be caused by a stroke or another urgent problem, and early evaluation guides treatment.

Ask which type of stroke occurred, what your blood pressure target is, whether your current medicine should change, and how to respond to a low or high reading. Ask how your other medicines interact with it and when your next review is due.
